EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Banksy

    Bullet Hole Bust

"Bullet Hole Bust" is an example of Banksy's sculptural artwork. The piece hails from Banksy's seminal exhibition "Barely Legal" in 2006, that catapulted the artist even further into the international consciousness. A subversive reworking of the age-old practice of sculptural busts, Banksy takes aim at the classical cannon with the addition of a bullet hole in the centre of the subject's forehead."

  • KAWS

    4ft Companion
    (Dissected Brown)

KAWS’s career started subverting bus shelter adverts displayed around NYC, adding his own characters to the slick promotional posters. Rather than removing the advert, KAWS choses to associate his characters with the brands being advertised. The irony being that now, the characters he created are considered more fondly than the brands that he defaced.

  • Shepard Fairey

    MLK JR

Fairey is one of the most productive contemporary street artists and graphic designers from America. This artwork by MLK JR was created in 2005. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" - quoting Martin Luther King, Jr, this artwork respects Dr. King's dignified, non-violent fight for justice and equality.

  • VHILS

    Dispersal Series #14

One of Vhils' representative works set in an urban space, it makes full use of the "scratch" technique, in which explosives and other materials are used on the surface of the wall to create the work by scraping away the surface layer. The theme of the work is the social changes that occur as a result of people's mobility and urbanization.

Official ambassador for the MUCA Tokyo show

Koshi Mizukami

Comments from Koshi Mizukami, official ambassador of MUCA exhibition

This is Koshi Mizukami, and I have been appointed as an official ambassador for MUCA exhibition, Tokyo show.
My creative activities are self-studied, but because of this, I believe that I have words and opinions that I can convey from my own unique perspective.
As well as my own creative activities, MUCA exhibition has inspired me to do my best to express myself in a richer way as an actor, which is my main work.
I hope that everyone who visits this exhibition will also be touched by art and be inspired in their own ways.

Koshi Mizukami Profile

Koshi Mizukami was born in 1999 in Fukuoka Prefecture. He made his acting debut in the drama Chugakusei Nikki (Meet Me After School). In 2020, he made his screen debut in Yayoi, 3 Gatsu: Kimi wo Aishita 30 Nen (I Have Loved You for 30 Years, Yayoi) and received the 33rd Nikkan Sports Film Awards' for Yujiro Ishihara Newcomer Award and the 44th Japan Academy Film Prize Best Newcomer of the Year Award for his performances in Nozomi (Wish) and Dokuta Desu no Isan: Black File (The Legacy Of Dr. Death: Black File) also released in the same year. In 2021, he also appeared in the NHK historical drama Seiten wo Tsuke (Blue Sky), in which his impassioned performance garnered much attention. Recent major film credits include Soshite, Baton wa Watasareta (The Passed Baton) (2021), Shikei ni Itaru Yamai (Lesson in Murder) (2022), OUT and Ano Hana ga Saku Oka de, Kimi to Mata Deaetara (I Wish I Could Meet You Again on the Hill Where That Flower Blooms) (2023), the NHK Asadora Boogie Woogie, and TV Asahi Drama Premium Ogon no Toki (Golden Time).

Comment from Subaru Kimura, the narrator of the Japanese audio guide

As a fan of street art, I am very excited about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Numerous well-known artworks are finally landing in Japan!? And we can see them live!? I can't wait for it to start. The works on display this time are experiential art pieces that strongly embody antitheses or messages against society, capturing and holding the hearts of those who see them. I hope that all visitors will enjoy the works from various angles through this audio guide.

Subaru Kimura Profile

At the age of 14, he was selected for the role of Takeshi Goda (Gian) in "Doraemon", and since then, he has been active not only as a voice actor, but also as an actor and narrator. In recent years, he has played the role of Moritsuna Watanabe in the historical drama "What Will You Do, Ieyasu?", and is also actively involved in TV variety shows, serving as the main MC for "Oha Suta" and a regular on Thursdays for "Hirunandesu".

ABOUT MUCA

Founded in 2016 by Christian and Stephanie Utz, the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art(MUCA) is Germany's first museum dedicated to urban and contemporary art. Housed in a disused electrical substation, MUCA is a stone's throw from Marienplatz, in the centre of Munich.
MUCA’s mission is to integrate urban art into the contemporary art discourse and to exhibit the most celebrated artists of the 20th and 21st century. Since its inception, MUCA has become a leading authority in collection building, with a focus on housing significant works by artists renowned for using the urban landscape as part of their practice.
The MUCA collection now holds over 1,200 art works and is well acknowledged as one of the most important collections of urban and contemporary art in Europe. It has progressively expanded over 25 years to include works from Pop Art to New Realism, covering themes including art in the urban environment, figurative painting, and socio-political issues.

ABOUT URBAN ART

Urban art refers to art that is created in urban spaces, specifically on public surfaces such as walls, buildings, roads, and bridges. Various types of urban art exist, including graffiti art, street art, poster art, stencil art, and mosaic art, among others. These forms of art can change the landscape of a city and often provoke emotions in people. The definition of urban art is not clear-cut, as it encompasses diverse forms of expression, but it shares the commonality of being art in an urban setting. Urban art can also convey political or social messages at times.
